Be the Change in 2010

Welcome to 2010, a new year, a new decade and a new era in JCI.

Happy New Year! Begin the year with a message from 2010 JCI President Roland Kwemain and his vision for creating positive change in 2010.

As we approach a year of change for our organization. In 2010, think about the challenges of our world, our countries and our communities, and look for new ways to bring change. Think critically, and as young active citizens with vision and determination, find solutions that create change and impact our communities.

Local Impact
To truly be the change you wish to see in the world, begin with action at the local level. Each community faces unique challenges. The young people of the world must identify these problems and find creative solutions. JCI members must lead the movement to bring young people, businesses and government institutions to bring positive change in each community. In 2010, JCI Members continue to target projects that touch at the heart of community needs with the UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs) as their guide.

Expanding our Reach
In order to make an impact, find individuals who share our vision and help them to join our ranks as members. If you are not a member of JCI, learn about our organization and how we create positive change around the world. If you are a JCI Member, bring a friend, a colleague or a neighbor to a meeting, an event or a JCI project to magnify our impact in 2010.

Global Collaboration
We now have five years to reach our objective of one million bed nets through the JCI Nothing But Nets Campaign, and this year, members around the world are increasing their efforts to eradicate malaria thanks to local projects, creative fundraising and individual action.

Join the JCI Nothing But Nets Birthday Campaign. Through this campaign, members can use their birthdays to make a difference by asking their friends and families to donate an insecticide-treated bed net in honor of their special day. Learn more about the campaign, and see who has already joined.

Approaching the 100th Anniversary of JCI's First Local Organization

In 2015, we’ll celebrate the 100th Anniversary of JCI's First Local Organization, originally established under the name of "Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA)."

    Henry
Almost a century ago, Henry "Hy" Giessenbier, Jr., and a group of young people decided to take responsibility for their personal and professional development as well as for the progress and welfare of their community by helping tackle difficult problems around them. Together with other 32 young men,  Giessenbier established the Young Men's Progressive Civic Association (YMPCA), JCI's First Local Organization, at the Mission Inn in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 13, 1915.

Since 1915, countless dedicated young leaders like Giessenbier have ensured the organization's progress while contributing to the development of JCI members and the advancement of their communities. Their efforts and achievements must not be forgotten.

The historic information presented here is an effort to honor those leaders. Thanks to contributions from former JCI officers, staff members, members in general and collaborators, we have gathered significant historic details. JCI publications have also been used as reference. We hope JCI's history will serve to inspire future generations of JCI members to emulate their predecessors and take the organization to higher and higher levels of accomplishment.
